Synergy Reports that U.S. Data Center Capacity Will Continue to Balloon Despite Increasing Headwinds

RENO, NV, July 23, 2026 – Synergy Research Group, now part of TechInsights, today announced that despite various power and public opinion obstacles, its latest data shows that the total capacity of U.S. data centers will double in the next three years, driven by aggressive build-out of hyperscale operators’ owned data centers, which will double in operational capacity within just two years.

Synergy’s known pipeline of future large data centers currently stands at almost 1,500 worldwide, with almost half of those in the U.S. That represents around 45 gigawatts of IT capacity to be added in the U.S., driven by 74 different companies expanding their data center footprint. Beyond the firm pipeline, there are numerous longer-term plans that will ensure continued strong growth over the next six years and beyond. While the bulk of that added capacity will be in the form of hyperscale operators building new data centers, colocation firms and enterprises will also contribute to that growth, thanks in particular to data center operators leasing facilities to hyperscalers and to the growth of neoclouds.US Capacity FC  "It is indisputable that constrained availability of power and rising local concerns over data centers are crimping many new plans for data centers,” said John Dinsdale, a Chief Analyst at Synergy Research Group. “But it is also clear that data center developers will continue to find ways around those issues and that booming demand will continue to drive aggressive capacity growth. Over the next five years, the U.S. will continue to account for well over half of the world’s operational data center capacity. Seven hyperscale companies are driving much of that growth as they build out their U.S. AI campuses, but we also see another 67 companies that are building large data centers or campuses in the country.”

The Synergy data is based on a combination of several detailed quarterly tracking research services, enabling comprehensive analysis of data center capacity, segmented by region, country and metropolitan area. The hyperscale research is based on in-depth analysis of the data center footprint and operations of the world’s major cloud and internet service firms, including the largest operators in SaaS, IaaS, PaaS, search, social networking, e-commerce and gaming. The colocation research is based on Synergy’s in-depth tracking of the colocation market, including quarterly data on over 320 individual companies. The enterprise on-premises analysis is based on Synergy’s tracking of the data center hardware market.
