New Q2 data from Synergy Research Group shows that IBM and Microsoft are among the top-ranked companies in both cloud infrastructure hardware & software and cloud infrastructure services. While Cisco and Amazon lead those two individual market segments, IBM and Microsoft are unusual in having such a strong position in both markets. Quarterly revenues for cloud infrastructure hardware & software reached $12.0 billion having grown by 8% year-on-year. Cloud infrastructure services is currently a smaller market with revenues of less than $4 billion in the quarter, but those revenues are growing by almost 50% year-on-year.
“On the hardware & software side of cloud IBM is strongly positioned across a range of product areas, while Microsoft’s position is due to its dominance of server operating systems” said Jeremy Duke, Synergy Research Group’s founder and Chief Analyst. “Over on the infrastructure services side of cloud IBM has a strong position in both public and private cloud services while Microsoft is a top two player in public IaaS and PaaS segments” added John Dinsdale, a Chief Analyst and Research Director. “While IBM and Microsoft are in the limelight due to their scale, they are not unique in playing in both the hardware/software and services side of cloud. Others include HP, Fujitsu, Dell and VMware” said Duke.
