In 2011 the APAC region generated just over USD20 billion in data center infrastructure revenues for the world’s leading technology vendors, the market having grown by 23% from the previous year, according to data from Synergy Research Group. With the computing and storage segments dominating the market, it is little surprise that the top three vendors were HP, IBM and Dell. In aggregate they accounted for 51% of 2011 revenues. Cisco comes in at number four thanks to its leading position in the smaller networking and switching segment of the market. Geographically Japan accounted for 34% of the regional market and China 25%, followed by India (10%), South Korea (9%) and Australia (7%).
One striking feature of the market is that eight of the top ten vendors in the APAC region are US vendors, with Fujitsu and Hitachi being the only local companies featuring among the market leaders. The two Japanese vendors each increased their regional market share somewhat in 2011, but this remains a market that is almost totally dominated by US technology and vendors.
“Data centers are hugely important to both enterprises and service providers and we’re seeing equally strong growth in both sectors, ” said Jeremy Duke, Founder & Chief Analyst, Synergy Research Group. “The fact that data centers provide the fundamental technology building blocks that support the provision of cloud services guarantees that the data center market will continue to grow strongly over the next five years. The demand for cloud services is booming.”
