New Q1 data from Synergy Research Group shows that Equinix continues to grow its market share in the fragmented colocation market. Retail revenues from colocation reached $3.7 billion in the first quarter, having grown 9% from a year previously, with Equinix share of the market reaching almost 11%. The next largest player is CenturyLink-Savvis with a 4% market share, followed by a handful of operators that each accounts for 3% of the market and a long tail of operators with a market share of 2% or less. Three years ago Equinix had a market share of 8%.
The colocation market has continued to grow steadily, with total retail revenues from colocation operators growing by over 11% in each of the last two years. On a rolling four quarterly basis, annual growth has been highest in the APAC region (18%) and lowest in EMEA (8%). While Equinix has a clear worldwide lead and is also regional leader in both North and Latin America, TelecityGroup has the edge in EMEA and China Telecom and NTT are leaders in the APAC region.
“While cloud infrastructure services are getting most of the limelight, the substantially larger colocation market just keeps on growing” said Synergy Research Group’s John Dinsdale. “Clearly cloud services will take away some of the medium-term growth opportunity for colocation, but this is not a market that is going to start contracting any time soon.”
