Equinix and NTT Lead Regional Retail Colocation Markets in Q4

New Q4 retail colocation data from Synergy Research Group shows that Equinix led in two of the three major regional markets while NTT was a clear leader in the APAC region. In North America Equinix remains a long way clear of its nearest rivals – Verizon and CenturyLink – while in the EMEA region there is a close three-way race between Equinix, TeleCity and Interxion. In the APAC region NTT’s market share is more than double that of its nearest rival, China Telecom, while Equinix is the third-ranked regional operator.

Worldwide colocation revenues reached over $4.5 billion in Q4, having grown by 8% year-on-year. Quarterly spend on wholesale colocation equated to some 26% of retail spend, with the three top-ranked operators by revenue being Digital Realty Trust, Global Switch and DuPont Fabros.

“The structures of the three regional markets are very different” said John Dinsdale, a Chief Analyst and Research Director at Synergy Research Group. “In APAC there are a lot of telcos and single-country operators, while the EMEA market is led by companies with operations in multiple countries and the U.S. is home to a long list of colocation specialists that focus solely on their home market. Over time multi-country operators will account for an ever-increasing share of the market.”
